Don't Miss The Wonder!

Let me tell you my origin story.

My journey into magic began when I was 22 years old. During a slow Thursday afternoon at work, one of my friends pulled out a deck of cards and began to do tricks for us. While I had seen David Copperfield make the Statue of Liberty disappear on television, I had never seen magic happen close-up and live before. That moment of wonder and awe changed my life forever.

I left work and drove for half an hour to the closest bookstore. I bought the only book on card tricks they had and have been studying ever since. I have never forgotten that moment of wonder, and every time I perform, I try to recreate it in the lives of others.

When was the last time you had a moment of wonder in your life? When have you broken out of the day's routine and changed something that shifted how your whole day went?

We go to the same restaurants, order the same meal, and sometimes even sit at the same table. We talk to the same people, have the same coffee order, and drive the same route to and from work every day. It becomes so easy to just shut part of our brain off and sleepwalk through the day.

But how many opportunities for new and exciting moments do we miss by doing that? How often do we lose the chance to make an interesting new connection with someone who might change our life in a good way, with something as offbeat as a card trick in my case, or with some new insight in yours?

When was the last time you stopped outside at night before you walked into your house to simply look up at the stars? The night sky is breathtaking on a clear evening. When was the last time you went somewhere without looking at your phone the whole time and just soaked in your surroundings? Are there birds singing in beautiful trees that are swaying in the wind outside your office building that you have never noticed because you're just focused on getting inside?

My challenge to you today is to find the pivot moments in your day that break the monotony. Order a new type of coffee, sit in a new seat at lunch, say hello to someone you never talk to at work, and just admire the beauty of every moment that is life. Appreciate it for the gift that it truly is, rather than constantly going from place to place and never paying attention to the journey.

Break the mold of monotony in your day. It doesn't have to be a huge change at all...just switch something small and see what new ideas or energy start flowing into your life.

It doesn't matter if you're seventeen or seventy; every single new experience can be that magic moment in your life if you give it a chance.

P.S. Next time you see me, ask me to show you that card trick that changed my life forever. It's still one of my favorite tricks to this day!
